Stolen First Line Poetry
Okay, here's your new game.

Put your iTunes collection on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.

It's okay to change verb tenses and original intended punctuation. You can skip a few tracks if they're from comedy songs or spoken-word or the first line is something like "Ooh, hey, here we go, uh, hey, uh," but try to use whatever you're given. Rearranging the order of lines is absolutely prohibited.

Help Me: I Think I'm Falling (In Love (Again))

Nora says I don't love her (the way she wants to be loved) -
"I need your love, babe!"
You think that I can't live without your love? You'll see
two dozen other dirty lovers!
(You're doing everything that people said to.)

Closing time:
"If you ever plan to motor west,
I'll draw the whole world and separate everything.
God damn! It's a joke that you never forget."

I was at my weakest state and you kept me pushing on.
I never walk when I can run -
no more Mister Nice Guy.
(When the night was still,
I opened my eyes when you were kissing me.)

"Caramba caracho ein whiskey!"
When I went to your town on the wide-open shore,
there were needles in the evening air.
"Have you ever been close to tragedy?"
"Oi, lienda, bella che fa?"
"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?"

...mine came out pretty radio-pop-heavy but I love it anyway. :-D

"You Never Asked Me What I Wanted"

I met this girl:
Twenty-twenty vision to see
Movies of Antarctica

Your last words
Lifted high on silvery swells,

You gotta eat!
Revelation artistry:
Du hast Sterne im Gesicht (Well, it pays.)

I've been drifting along
I've seen you before; meet me up on 99
I've come to find you --
I ride my bike!
I'm gonna fly to the moon!

(bet you can't tell)

Take me to the place where we're children again
Have you seen yourself today?
You went looking for shelter.

There's no rest for the weary
Angel won't you call me
All alone on the floor
As logic stands you couldn't meet a man
Sometimes I think the cycle never ends
It's not time to make a change
I don't know if I'll ever get to kiss her again
Here come old flattop he come grooving up slowly
Clean living is easy in the Midwest
She loves the singer
Haben Sie gehört das Deutsche band?
Oh the fantastic things we'll do
Not yet nymphet
You know it's the time (oh goodbye to now)
There's a voice on the phone
It was 100 degrees as we slept beneath the willow trees
Suicide, suicide machine
It was the girl with the string around her neck
I am a boy, lost at sea
The flowers you gave me are rotten

Pray to the God that you don't quite believe in
To bless this fleeting moment

I'm only doing 10 lines because I'm lazy.
11th will be my title.
here goes...

I wish I would've met you

yeah, your tonsils mostly taste like the pine-sol
the rain falls hard on a humdrum town
I think we've reached our limit
keep the noise low, she doesn't want to blow it
oh-ho, this is beginning to hurt
it's the smell of hot summertime trash
I guess it starts with the sharks
the first time that I met her I was throwing up in the ladies room
I'd like to think that it's out of fear when you blow into town
quiet desperation, it ain't my goddamn scene

- Toasty & the Plagiarists

"She drove it like she stole it. She stole it fast, and with a multitude of casualties."

Lines and lines of book spines cover every wall:

We'll be fighting in the street
Everyday I get in queue
Mama's got a squeeze box she wears on her chest
Mama's got a problem she don't know what to say

I had a lovely brunch with Jesus Christ
I woke up in a Soho doorway
Want some whiskey in your water
No one knows what it's like
On that sunny day
I can go anyway

Dog in a manger
Why do you build me up
Suck my blood like a leech
I've paid my dues

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
Don't you feel it growing day by day
Got a feeling 21 is going to be a good year
Wine, women and song
Let me welcome you ladies and gentlemen
And I am not afraid of dying, anytime will do

CAUTION: Over the weekend, a short psychic escaped from police custody.
He is to be considered a small medium at large.

"Dusseldorf Rolf"

All right: pills!
Every breath you take
He's Yoda!
The swimmer is so far from the distant shore
And then it starts

You tell me you don't see in color
Right now in the dampness of a tunnel
The world ain't gonna stay still
Breathless from the coffee
All in all, it's no one's fault

Don't you feel that, the way you've been treating me, baby
Interlocked, insatiable
This next song is called "I Can't Drive"
And now, Dusty Springfield!
It's sad to think of leaving now

Yo de do de ho
I'm outside your house
Don't even think about reaching me
I saw her at a party
We saw you from the urchin's side

I did this on my desktop instead of my laptop. I am glad I did.

"I Have Faced It"

Come on Balthazar, I refuse to let you die
Wakey wakey, rise and shine
Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner;
Here's something beautiful, now smash it to bits

When they brought me down,
(If time is my vessel)
It was handsome at the auction

We've got bets you're on the move
Having awareness, but no true sense of self
There's holes up in the sky

Up on a hill is where we begin -
In the beginning there were answers
I dreamed I was a pigeon
(I haven't slept for two days)

You rush up to the top
He snuck out of the city -
Busted the safe, stole the key to the city
"How did anybody find out where I was?"

You, I wish I knew you better
I left your house this morning

She Said

Ida, as she walked along, she dreamed this very song, a pretty melody.
"I dont think it's going to happen any more
All I want is the best for our lives my dear."

Wont you tell me what?
And I want.
Your hair.

I'm in you.
I'm going to the doctor's on Friday.
I've seen all of this before

Good morning to you!
Please slow it down.
Not a day goes by
It's so hard to dodge
Another weekend without makeup
Waking up at 12 in my clothes again
(We are two mariners)

I'd say that this is the darkest song I ever wrote
There's a part of me you'll never know
Faith you're driving me away
Enough of that namby-pamby nonsense

Years Ago

I'll be the grapes fermented,
bottled and served with a table set,
but all I ever wanted to be
was a woolly muffler on your naked neck.

Wake up you sleepy head,
Instant Karma's gonna get you.
The death of a disco dancer!
"I know a girl who..."

Crossing the border states to the wrong side
to stand in the place where you live.
It's a still life watercolor.

If I had to make me?
Your long blond hair and your eyes of blue.
Picture yourself in a boat on a river.
Am I correct?

At last I am born: The beat goes on!
If we can call them friends,
then we can call them on the telephone.
It's the way he looks at you, although.

My lover lives in the brown shag carpet of a cheap motel.
Hello, Darkness, my old friend.

I didn't change the order, though I'm liberal with line breaks and added one conjunction and one preposition for flow.

Please, just put this to sleep
Once upon a baby's breath
She should have stayed away from friends
Sitting there, where you buried your pets
I live cement

I woke to the sound of eggs
Well I remember when I was just a baby
I am wishing you a well
Little salamander, where did you go?
Oh, I want to go

I said what you wanted to hear
I wrote you a letter today
Sit on a train, reading a book
She's making ghosts
Satan gave me a taco and it made me really sick

Fight me, fight me in practice
Don't push me out
Ah well everybody's heard about the bird
I just got in from town
Morning looks much better through a window going by

Did anyone else ever do this?

We can talk about it later
But there's no later
Is there?

I'm about to! Twice!

Bam Chika Bam Chika Boom Boom Boom
I don't want to get over you,
(Each of these old light leaves)
I call all you gathered neighbours -
I run the goddamn pretzel store:
Been eating idiot food for fourteen days
Underline everything.

This cut goes out to all a'y'all who've been missing us for mad years:
Oh, you've got flaws
"Level that house, tie a rope to the back of the bus."
I'll be the first to admit this is a bright but halted age,
Found a flaw in the ending of a book that I've read twice.
I'd like to drop my trousers to the world
(Coocoocoocoocoododoo! Get Carter to the phone)
I'm having a party but your not invited

Player gimme some brew and I might just chill
Outside there's children laughing
Hot breath, soft skin, warm laugh
Dog in the manger
Smeared black ink
There's blood between my legs

You're Only Halfway Through Your Working Day
Whatcha gonna do now the party's over?
I promise everything's alright
(Enough is enough is enough is enough is enough is enough is enough)
"He's a WHAT? He's a WHAT?!"
I don't mind the weather.

So I hear you wasted time on the Murder City Devils,
Took a weekend, went to Provo.
"Why does every one of her lovers leave her?
Are we having the time of our lives?"
You play hard to want -
It was the biggest cock you'd ever seen
And I was just another West Coast maximalist.
Oh, I like it!
Basically there's like this big DC/Baltimore myth thing
Tasting the tears that run down the gutter
Sex with God, sex on top of God.

I'm tired of boys who fight with girls and stain the sheets,
I restored your mother's faith in men whilst boring you to death.
This next song is about a girl I loved very much-

Well, the Universe is everything.

It makes me lonely,
Speed kills, but beauty lives forever
Out of the darkness the zombie did call,
It's a perfect day for letting go

Spineless from the start, sucked into the part
Call it education it was somewhere in between
Getting a little erratic here
Loving and touching

Your life is a story
You're comin' home
Settle down now and sit with me
The human race was dyin' out

No dough, no place to go
I'm not afraid to let you kill me (I know)
With two tape decks and a microphone
You've treated me wrong, I've treated you right

I'm a fleabit peanut monkey
If I may, if I might, lay me down weeping
It's like I never had to see it in your eyes or feel it
I'd say it was the right time

If that's your statement, your voice is too loud

"Greedy, Greedy"

You're still looking to your car door
When she left me, I fell
You can see it in the cards
La la la la la la, la la la la la
Memorize the basics

When things aren't going your way
She treats me bad
Funny how it only rains on your side of the street
I wanna give birth to your baby, baby
We make our own padlocks

Lost in time, I can count the words
Any time that you want
You are listening to community radio for East Central Illinois
I hate talking on a microphone
But you are in for, like, an awesome night

Oh, all the feeling's gone
Going filling in space
I am looking for a better class of living
Once we were happy, then suddenly you left me
Come on around to my way of thinking

A few of these were impossible to verify.

In my arms we shall begin with none of the rocks

well, it was a weekend
everybody cares everybody understands
i was there in the backstage
im gonna be a mighty king, so enemies beware!
now standback for your own safety

they say that heaven is ten zillion light years away
he's a twentieth century boy
this is just banter
you cannot get all that you want

aint from the streets of compton
we don't have to be over 21
do you wanna live forever baby
you can touch it
i used to say that boys are tough as nails

here's some thing to think about
they're walking by the night
1234 more makes 7
let's pretend we never met
me and my arrow
